This home by North Carolina-based Chandler Design-Build was named Project of the Year in the Small Volume Single Family category of the 2012 National Green Building Awards. Certified to both Energy Star and the National Green Building Standard, Paar Residence was built with a panelized, double-stud wall system and “ serves as a showcase for a cutting-edge, air-to-water heat pump combined with a radiant heat and water heater application, ” according to the NAHB. Low-VOC Light Sheetrock for Easy Install

It turns out lighter gypsum wallboard sells well. In July 2010, USG Corporation tested the market for Sheetrock UltraLight panels, which are anywhere from 15-24 pounds lighter per panel depending on the size, and they outsold heavier product, according to NYSE Magazine . Since then, the panels have rolled out to several Home Depot stores and a 40% lighter joint compound was introduced in January this year. In terms of green attributes, the non-combustible core is made with recycled content and the face and back paper is 100% recycled. In addition, the panels qualify as a low-VOC emitting material ( i.e. , compliant with CA 01350).

Clayton Homes , maker of the popular i-House , is the largest producer of homes in the country and accounted for 7% of homes constructed in 2011, according to the annual report of parent Berkshire Hathaway. They have a large residential footprint, and their efforts to educate home purchasers can go a long way. So it’s great to learn of their recent announcement of a new home energy label along the lines of what we’ve discussed previously with other builders . The following Home Energy Guide has been rolled out across the country to every new home the company has on display. Clayton’s home energy label is modeled after the DOE’s Builders Challenge label, yet it’s different in some respects. The company took feedback and found that homeowners want four things in a label: (1) a visual scale, (2) energy saving features, (3) projected monthly costs, and (4) projected savings compared to a home without the energy saving features

Today, two prefab veterans launch their website for a new company called Connect:Homes with a mission to “deliver modern homes that are affordable, green, and available wherever your are.” The co-founders Jared Levy and Gordon Stott, both formerly with Marmol Radziner Prefab , started the Los Angeles-based enterprise to reinvent modular prefab and deliver homes that are predictably priced, inherently green, and shipped most anywhere at a lower cost.

GE Debuts 100-Watt Replacement Bulb

Today GE introduced a new and innovative 100-watt replacement bulb that uses only 27 watts with the help of LEDs and jet technology. The Energy Smart bulb won’t be available until the first half of 2013 at an undetermined price, though the technology will be on display at the LIGHTFAIR conference that’s being held in Las Vegas this week. This is the first Energy Star qualified home in British Columbia, according to builder Mandala Homes . The company’s been around since 2000, and this is their new, round showcase with passive solar design, tuned windows, non-toxic finishes, a custom greenhouse, and all sorts of materials that emphasize energy efficiency. It’s owned by Mandala Homes president Lars Chose and partner Rachel Ross. The Chose-Ross Residence has 2,300 square feet, which includes three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a workshop, two outdoor rooms, and a storage room. Chose-Ross was finished on the outside with Western Red Cedar siding and trim and fir post and beams, while the interior is finished with Western Red Cedar ceilings, cork flooring, ceramic tile, fir trim, Yolo and Natura no-VOC paints, and no-VOC finishes from EcoCrete and Vermont Natural

CNU 20 is the premier conference for urbanism and planning and will feature sessions on key sustainability issues such as sprawl repair, rainwater management, green infrastructure, urban agriculture, and effective messaging of sustainability. There will be plenty of opportunities to follow along with the conference online and through social media.
